One of the most recognisable artists and frontmen of the Yugoslav new wave, Jura Stublić, will perform with his band Film on Saturday, September 5, from 9 p.m. at Forte Mare Fortress, as part of the 20th anniversary edition of the Herceg Novi Comic Festival.

Jura Stublić and Film belong to the first generation of the Zagreb new wave, a movement that transformed Yugoslav popular music in the early 1980s. Film was founded in 1979 and released its first single, “Kad si mlad / Zajedno”, the following year. This was followed by the 1981 album Novo! Novo! Novo! Još jučer samo na filmu, a sada i u vašoj glavi, one of the landmark releases of the new wave, featuring songs such as “Neprilagođen”, “Zamisli život u ritmu muzike za ples”, “Dijete ulice”, “Moderna djevojka” and “Odvedi me iz ovog grada”.

Stublić soon demonstrated, however, that his artistic sensibility extended beyond the new wave energy of the band’s early years. With the albums Sva čuda svijeta (1983) and Signali u noći (1985), Film developed a broader musical expression, producing songs such as “Mi nismo sami”, “Boje su u nama”, “Pjevajmo do zore” and “Signali u noći”. Following a change in the line-up and the continuation of his work under the name Jura Stublić i Film, a new series of major songs emerged, including “Sjećam se prvog poljupca”, “Srce na cesti”, “Ivana”, “Ljubav je zakon”, “Dobre vibracije” and “Doći ću ti u snovima”.

Stublić and Film thus represent a journey through several stages of Yugoslav rock — from the explosion of the new wave and the legendary Kulušić club, through the great albums of the 1980s, to songs that have continued to live on as part of the collective musical memory.

In 2010, Stublić received the Porin Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising his outstanding contribution to Croatian music.
